Knowledge Management has become an ever-increasing suite of interconnected tools and techniques – it’s easy to feel overwhelmed without a map.
Having bounced some early ideas around with Geoff, and spent far too many idle moments at airports fiddling with PowerPoint, I think it’s time to stop tweaking and start sharing. So here it is: my rendition of the KM Landscape (click to enlarge).
I wanted to try and show the breadth of techniques and processes, the connections between them, and also some of our neighbouring disciplines and opportunities for boundary collaboration.
It’s far from perfect (I need more than two dimensions to really do the juxtaposition justice) – but hopefully it’ll illustrate some new places to explore.
Let me know if you find any new destinations, landmarks or pub walks to include.

I love the subtle inclusion of the Cynefin framework. 😉

Subtle, and slightly peninsular! 🙂

Where would Communications fit? You have Data and Information Management as “countries” on the map. I often think of them as one end of the spectrum with Communications at the other and KM somewhere in-between. As someone working in KM, I collaborate with colleagues who support the Communications function in our organization which is usually seen as separate. Communications folks engage in storytelling and social networking as well yet the outputs might look somewhat different from those from KM folks. Success story versus lessons learned in the case of storytelling and more of the one-way, awareness raising push of information versus facilitated conversation. I work with people who wear both the KM and Communications hats. Dual citizens I suppose.

Where can we fit a communication link between all these entities? I believe all of these are inter connected?

Where do we fit human mentality to create their own data lists and hide if from others? Where do we put human tendency to only trust their own data and recreate the wheel with own data collection
